Attention Redwood High Music Supporters! Please select this link and read an important letter from Redwood High Music Boosters. Thank you!
Music Boosters Fund Raising The Redwood Foundation funds the majority of the Music Department instruction, instrument repair and capital expenses. However, there is a need for additional funds to cover expenses such as transportation, off-site theater rentals, sheet music, additional instruments, band shirts, supplies, administrative help, guest artists, studio recording, and more. We also fund field trips and outings to places like the San Francisco Symphony, Yoshi's and our local middle schools. Finally, the Music Boosters provides funding for our music department Student Awards, and the Senior Retreat.
Although school policy forbids suggesting a specific amount, most families contribute about $225, and if you can manage more, please consider contributing at a higher level. Thank you for helping us!

Participate as a Music Booster All parents of Redwood High music students are considered to be Music Boosters members. There are no membership fees or dues, however your contributions are needed and welcome. Please -- volunteer, attend a Music Boosters meeting on the first Tuesday or every school month, come and hear the guest artist performances, help plan the evolution of Music Boosters activities and contribute!
Program Successes Section Instructions/Guest Artists: Funds from the Redwood Foundation, augmented by Music Boosters, have enabled the music program to add instruction on a semi-regular basis for many of the sections. Additionally, John Mattern has booked numerous guest performances. This program brings professional performing and teaching musicians to the music students.
Middle School Outreach: Funds from the Music Boosters enables a "meet and greet" performance for music students at the local middle schools in our district. Private middle school outreach is important too. A separate Music Boosters committee focuses attention on all the area middle schools in an effort to educate teachers and parents about the quality of the music program at Redwood High School.
Save Our Steinway Campaign: The department owns a beautiful, high quality 1927 Steinway "L" grand piano that had fallen into disrepair. The Music Boosters, with assistance from the Redwood Foundation, was able to have this wonderful piano fully refurbished.
Concert Performances Performance opportunities for students are created, funded and produced by the Redwood Music Department. The Music Boosters provides whatever resources are needed to assist in these events.
Events include multiple workshops/clinics and a fundraising benefit show.Concerts include the Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble, plus the Jazz Bands. There are also three nights of concerts featuring the Performance Workshop classes which range from original singer/songwriter pieces to rock covers (these have often ended with a large band R&B performance).
Traveling to concerts, competitions and festivals usually takes place during winter and early spring, culminating with the spring concerts and graduation. Other events provide performance opportunities until early June. Check the website for updated schedules, recordings and photos from various venues.
Music Program Status When John Mattern came to Redwood High School, the music program was at its lowest ebb in school history. John has worked hard to renew the music program for our children, and now attracts talented student musicians throughout Marin County. He has added innovative classes and offers boundless energy and inspiration. In addition to his fabulous work with the Symphonic Band, Wind Ensemble, Jazz band and ensembles, John's innovations have brought a UC-accredited music program for students in rock, folk, "beginning guitar and bass," and Performance Workshop.
Our motivated students have devoted significant energy and effort to their classwork and performances. Parents of music students have similarly provided support in every imaginable way. Thanks to this winning combination, the Music program has been reborn, and is soaring to new heights!
